In an unprecedented move, Treyarch’s Zombies is making its debut in the Modern Warfare series with Modern Warfare 3. However, this mode offers a unique co-op experience that deviates from the traditional round-based Zombies. Here is a comprehensive guide to Modern Warfare 3’s Zombies mode.
A Departure from Traditional Zombies
Modern Warfare 3’s Zombies mode introduces large-scale extraction gameplay instead of the conventional round-based format. This mode combines elements of Zombies and MW2’s DMZ, creating a thrilling PvE experience for trios. Additionally, matches can accommodate up to eight squads of three, totaling 24 players. For an even greater challenge, players can choose to tackle the mode solo.
This new open-world environment allows players to dictate their playstyle. They can opt to simply slay the undead or engage in Dark Aether story missions, hunt contracts, and more. The world is populated by various enemies, including standard zombies, human soldier NPCs, and the mimic creature from Black Ops Cold War Zombies.
MW3’s Zombies Narrative
The storyline of Modern Warfare 3 follows the events of Black Ops Cold War’s Dark Aether narrative. Operation Deadbolt was initiated in response to the outbreaks witnessed during the Cold War.
In Operation Deadbolt, select members of Task Force 141 must thwart Viktor Zakhaev, an antagonist from Modern Warfare 2019, who has unleashed an undead outbreak using a vial of Aetherium. This Zombie-creating substance is similar to the Dark Aether crystals from the previous storyline but has been refined into an even deadlier form. Task Force 141 must uncover Zakhaev’s complete plans for the outbreak and Aetherium.
The Largest Zombies Map Ever
This new mode takes place on Warzone’s expansive Urzikstan map, making it the largest Zombies map to date. It boasts an unprecedented number of zombies. Urzikstan is an urban setting with 11 main points of interest, including cities, a farm, and a military base. The complete map and Warzone details can be found here.
Unique Weapons, Perks, and More
MW3’s Zombies map retains core features such as the mystery box, iconic perks, and the Pack-a-Punch machine. Classic Wonder weapons make a comeback, alongside a new addition called the Scorcher. The Scorcher not only dispatches zombies but also serves as a mobility tool, allowing players to traverse the map in a unique manner. The upgrade system from Black Ops Cold War returns, enabling players to level up perks, field upgrades, and ammo types for additional advantages.
Similar to DMZ, players can acquire powerful perks, Pack-a-Punched weapons, and retain their items for future matches by successfully extracting from the map. This includes special weapons like the iconic ray gun and the new Scorcher.
